Bye bye mechanical flex fan, hello electric fans. Holy crap these use a lot of power. When they’re both on my voltmeter on the dash drops from 14v to 10v. Pretty impressive power draw. They cover an impressive amount of the (THICK!) radiator, and hopefully they keep it adequately cool.

Each one could be pulling 50 amps, for a total of 100 amps. You best be checking the output of your alternator, and possibly upgrading...

Yeah... it’s a fairly tiny alternator.

50 amps would be excessive. I was under the impression that anything normal would be pushing 30amps tops

Gm 12si alternator time and upgraded gauge wire.

The thing is, the wiring going to them in the Civic was 18 gauge, which has a max power rating of 16 amps.

Yeah... they were wired in the Honda from the factory with 18 gauge wire, which has a max amp capacity of... 16 amps.

Yeah... they were wired using 18 gauge in the Honda so I used 18 gauge in the Jag but that handles a max of 16 amps which seems... low. I might re-do the hot wires with 12 gauge.

Crazy, I was just reading this article . Didn’t realize the how important the shroud was. By the way, you inspired me to break out my suction cup mount and get a driving clip .

So the goal was to gain hp by using the electric fans? Because I seem to remember you saying that the radiator is oversized and you were basically not hitting operating temp? I guess I am confused about the benefit of the electric fan when the engine temp would never necessitate a fan clutch operating since temps would not get hot enough anyway, thereby not causing much of a HP loss? The flex fan you had sucks, but I would use a stock fan and a thermal clutch. The electric fans only save about 5% hp anyway. Now if you have to upsize the alternator to run the fans, what is the HP noss of that, if any? What am I missing? What is the benefit of shoving electric fans in there?
And yeah, they draw a ton of power. Nothing is free.

The goal here was to get rid of the flex fan. That was the main goal. The car is *so smooth* now without that stupid unbalanced piece of shit hanging off the front of the car. Unfortunately the piddly little civic fans aren’t able to keep up in stop and go traffic so... back to the drawing board.
The other benefit is I can have fan speeds independent of engine speeds, so I could have both fans ramped up to full power while idling and keep the engine bay from heatsoaking as quickly as it did with the flex fan.
